THE BAILES BROTHERS
Oh So Many Years
BCD 15973 AH

The classic country brother sound and some of the greatest songs in traditional music! This is the first legitimate CD of the Bailes Brothers' work, despite the fact that they were one of the most popular acts on the Grand Ole Opry and the Louisiana Hayride in the mid-to-late 1940s. Roy Acuff spotted them in Charleston, West Virginia and brought them to the Opry and to Columbia Records. Their complete Columbia recordings (1945-1947), reissued here for the first time, include Searching For A Soldier's Grave, I Want To Be Loved But Only By You (later revived by Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper), Whiskey Is The Devil In Liquid Form, Oh So Many Years (revived by the Everly Brothers), and the Bailes Brothers' great enduring classic, Dust On The Bible. The brothers' tragic story is told in Eddie Stubbs' exclusive essay with haunting first-person accounts from all the brothers and those who worked with them. Fans of old-time music, classic hillbilly and bluegrass really need this one!

BOBBY BARNETT
AMERICAN HEROES AND WESTERN LEGENDS
BCD 16121-AH

Country singer Bobby Barnett, the child of parents who had each moved to Indian Territory before Oklahoma became a state in 1907, grew up aware of the state’s varied history. In 1974 he recorded an interesting concept album, ‘Heroes, History & Heritage Of Oklahoma’ for the Heritage label, which told in songs the stories of Oklahoma legends from Sequoyah, who devised the Cherokee alphabet, through legendary badmen like Pretty Boy Floyd, to the homespun philosopher, Will Rogers. The album increased awareness of Oklahoma’s rich historic heritage. In 1984 he recorded a second album of historical songs, but this time not limited to Oklahoma. Both albums are reissued here.

HARRY BELAFONTE
Island In The Sun: The Complete Recordings 1949 - 1957
BCD 16262 EL

Harry Belafonte begins here! This outstanding singer’s career began in the New York jazz clubs circa 1949, and this exclusive 5-CD set tells the story of Harry Belafonte's astonishing early career from the early jazz and pop sides for Roost, Capitol, and Jubilee (all unreissued until now and featuring the cream of New York jazzmen), to the fabulous ‘Calypso’ album...and beyond. Through it all, Harry Belafonte was constantly challenging himself, constantly looking for ways to introduce his ever-growing audience to the music of the world. These five CDs include Harry Belafonte's timeless interpretations of some of the great songs of the era...and songs that you'll still hear at his concerts, including Scarlet Ribbons, Man Smart (Woman Smarter), Matilda, I'm Just A Country Boy, John Henry, Jamaica Farewell, Day-O (The Banana Boat Song), Mary's Boy Child, Haiti Cherie, Hava Nageela, Mama Look-A-Boo-Boo, and Island In The Sun. Many songs were recorded several times as Belafonte refined his approach to them, and you'll hear all the unissued versions here. You'll also hear his first five albums complete: 'Mark Twain,' 'Belafonte,' 'Calypso' (the first million-selling LP in the history of the record business!), 'An Evening With Belafonte,' and 'Sings Of The Caribbean.' The 100-page hardcover book includes striking first-person reminiscences from Harry Belafonte's associates, including calypsonian Lord Burgess and choral director Robert DeCormier, as well as from the man himself! THE BLACKWOOD BROTHERS
Rock-A-My-Soul
--- 5-CD-Box & Book ---
BCD 16308 EK

In the 1950s, a quartet from Memphis, Tennessee changed the face of American gospel music. They brought the excitement and passion of gospel to millions, finding a huge national following for white Southern gospel music. Young Elvis Presley had his heart set on joining, and was a regular backstage visitor. They were The Blackwood Brothers. For the first fifteen years, the Blackwood Brothers travelled to small town church concerts, got up early for local radio shows, and sold songbooks out of the trunk of their car. Then, in 1950 they moved to Memphis, and suddenly things began to change. Their music was infused with a new energy, influenced by the Memphis scene of blues, jazz, R&B, and black gospel. They went where no white quartet had gone before. The Blackwoods took songs at the fastest tempo, and always had the hottest piano player. They had the most animated stage act, jumping around, bending over backwards, throwing the microphone stand back and forth. They had the most daring, the most complex, and most unique arrangements, often ending on breathtaking high sustained harmonies. They also had the most diverse repertoire, drawing from the rich heritage of black gospel music They sounded like no other group in music, and created a style that was the Blackwood Brothers.

This set comprises the Blackwoods' complete Victor recordings from 1952 to 1959, and includes all-time favorites like Rock-a-My Soul, It Is No Secret, Mansion Over the Hilltop, Swing Down Chariot, Take My Hand Precious Lord, My God Is Real, His Hand in Mine, How Great Thou Art and other songs later popularized by Elvis Presley. 5-CD-Box & BOOK
BCD 15951 EK

Old time music fans have asked repeatedly for the Blue Sky Boys. Now, painstakingly transferred from original masters, here are all of the RCA recordings. The Blue Sky Boys were the most important early brother duet. They influenced the Louvin Brothers, who recorded several of their songs including The Knoxville Girl; Emmylou Harris, who recorded another Blue Sky Boys classic,The Sweetest Gift; the Everly Brothers who adapted the Blue Sky Boys’ arrangement of I’m Just Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail, Kentucky, and others. Even Johnny Cash recorded a Blue Sky Boys song, Mary Of The Wild Moor, on his recent American CD.

These 5 CDs contain the Blue Sky Boys’ complete recordings for Bluebird and RCA Victor from 1936 - 1950. Nearly all of the 123 recordings are making their first appearance on CD. The sound has been digitally restored by Juergen Crasser without damaging the integrity or purity of the original recordings. The metal part transfers were done by Seth Winner.

PAT BOONE
THE FIFTIES - COMPLETE
LP - Size 12-CD Box with book
BCD 15884 LK

When the final history books are written on the golden musical era of the 50s, there will certainly be a chapter on Pat Boone. They may not say that he was one of the `Kings Of Rock 'n' Roll´ but he certainly was a `King Of The Hit Parade´ during the rock 'n' roll period. Pat sold more records world-wide than many rock superstars and indeed had rock 'n' roll hits of his own in the early days. He became known, however, more as a honey-voiced creator of great ballads with a beat and up-tempo pop tunes such as I´ll Be Home, Don´t Forbid Me, Love Letters In The Sand , Why Baby Why and I Almost Lost My Mind. Indeed, Boone garnered 23 top twenty hits in the USA and had the distinction of chart placings every single week over a four year period from 1955-1959! He carved a niche for himself in popular music from which he was never displaced and the quality of his output during this period was very high indeed and will always be enjoyed.

His recording career spans over 4 decades, commencing in 1953, where this boxed set starts, which we are proud to present as a fitting tribute and complete survey of his first important decade.

This boxed set contains:
- His rare 1953 Nashville Republic recordings.
- Every single DOT recording, made during the 50s - over 320 tracks in total, carefully remastered on 12 CDs by Bob Jones.
- Most hit collections feature his 1959 stereo remakes instead of the original singles. Here you have both: all the original monos plus all 15 of the later re-recordings for completists!
- All of Pat´s albums from this period are here - most are in stereo - and even an unissued album
- 88 previously unheard recordings, including many new songs. Also several quite different early `work outs´ of several of his big hits such as Friendly Persuasion, Love Letters, A Wonderful Time Up There, Too Soon To Know and others.
- An 84-page hardcover LP-sized book with a biography, newly researched discography and numerous photographs from Pat Boone´s own collection.
All this has been possible thanks to the help of Pat Boone, his personal assistant Maureen Mata and Charlie Shaw.

CLIFF BRUNER & THE TEXAS WANDERERS
LP-Size 5-CD Boxset with Book
BCD 15932-EI

Fiddler Cliff Bruner’s Texas Wanderers were one of the most important exciting bands in Texas Swing history, a group that affected countless others and bridged the gap between the western swing sound of the thirties and the burgeoning electric honky-tonk sound of the forties. Not only did Bruner introduce such enduring classics as It Makes No Difference Now, I’ll Keep On Loving You, Truck Driver’s Blues, and others, he also is one of the most revered and influential fiddle players in American music, an unmistakable, inventive and hard-swinging player, captured here at the height of his powers.

This 5-CD collection contains all of Bruner’s recordings as a full-time bandleader from 1937-1950, 123 songs, cut for Decca, Mercury and Ayo, including the classics mentioned above and others, like Bruner’s signature Jessie and his early cover of the blues standard Milk Cow Blues. It also contains telling alternate takes and sides never before issued commercially and features such legendary musicians as Bob Dunn, Leo Raley, Link Davis, Dickie McBride, as well as Moon Mullican, who in his recordings with Bruner defined the style that would make him a postwar country star.

CARL BUTLER
A Blue Million Tears

BCD 16118 AH

Carl Butler and his wife, Pearl, were forever immortalized by their hit Don't Let Me Cross Over. It remains one of the alltime classics of hard country. But Don’t Let Me Cross Over was merely the highlight of a recording career that began in 1950 and ended just months before his death in 1992. That one hit notwithstanding, Carl Butler was a hard luck journeyman country musician who played “live” music on small radio stations in the 1940s and 1950s and toured ceaselessly. Neglected toward the end of his life, he lost his farm and his savings, and died alone in a trailer park. His wife, Pearl, who had toured with him for forty years, had died three years earlier.
This CD features all of Carl’s early recordings for two American labels, Capitol and OKeh. Incredibly, only two of these recordings were reissued on LP and none of them have appeared on CD before now. Country music is mostly associated with Nashville, but when Carl Butler grew up there was a more thriving scene in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Knoxville sound was rooted in Bluegrass music, and so was Carl Butler. By the time he began recording, however, he veered between the ancient tones of bluegrass and the fast emerging honky tonk style. This set includes the bluegrass classic White Rose, as well as his sparkling original versions of I'll Go Steppin' Too (later recorded by the preeminent bluegrass duo Flatt & Scruggs) and I Wouldn't Change You If I Could (later a #1 hit for country star Ricky Skaggs, and a bluegrass standard). Carl's version of Angel Band from these early Capitol sessions is also considered definitive. The ‘O Brother’ soundtrack made Angel Band into a classic, but this version is the best!
This is the sort of release that fans have come to expect from Bear Family. Rare and rarely -reissued classic recordings that have withstood the test of time. Fans of Fifties hardcore country music must not pass this by!

The White Rose - Plastic Heart - The Heartbreak Express - Country Mile - String Of Empties - You Plus Me - Shake, Rattle And Roll - No Guarantee  On My Heart - Our Last Rendezvous - No Trespassing - I Live My Life Alone  - Linda Lou - Vicious Lies - River Of Love - A Blue Million Tears - Everything Will Be The Same - Stepping On My Heart - A Penny For Your Thoughts (A Nickel For A Hug) - I Need You So - Alone Without You - You Can't Insure A House  Of Dreams - For Fooling Around - Crowded Out - My Heart Tells Me (You'll  Come Back To Stay) - So Close - It's Wrong To Be Jealous - A Victim Of Lies - I Just Said Goodbye To My Dreams

CARL BUTLER & THE WEBSTER BROTHERS
I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could

BCD 16699-AH

Bluegrass and traditional country music fans had almost given up hope that they would ever hear the classic recordings on this CD. Although Carl Butler is best known for his #1 country hit Don't Let Me Cross Over, he had a long and prolific career that began in Knoxville in the late 1940s and continued until his death in 1992. The first installment in Bear Family's documentation of the great and greatly underrated Carl Butler was 'A Blue Million Tears' (BCD 16118), which included all the Capitol and Okeh recordings made between 1950 and 1953. Now we pick up the story in 1954, and we're not only including all of Carl's unbelievably hard-to-find Columbia recordings made between 1954 and 1958, but the recordings that he made with the Webster Brothers...recordings that those lucky enough to hear them regard as the pinnacle of country gospel and hard country. Among the highlight songs are the original version of I Wouldn't Change You If I Could (later a #1 country hit for Ricky Skaggs) and a version of Angel Band that not only preceded the Stanley Brothers' recording but is regarded by many as the absolutely definitive version of this classic song (later recorded by Emmylou Harris and countless others). Other highlights are his recordings with the Webster Brothers, plus a few Webster solos.

Carl Butler: That's All Right - I'll Go Steppin' Too - Kisses Don't Lie - I Wouldn't Change You If I Could
Webster Brothers: Till The End Of The World Rolls 'Round - It's All Left Up To You - Glory Mountain - That Great Eternal Singing
Carl Butler & The Webster Brothers: Seven Years Blues - Road Of Broken Hearts - Looking Through The Windows Of Heaven - Angel Band - Hallelujah, We Shall Rise! - Walking In God's Sunshine
Carl Butler: Your Wedding Day - If I Could Spend My Heartaches - It's My Sin - Borrowed Love
Carl Butler & The Webster Brothers:
Where We Never Grow Old - Somebody Touched Me - Only One Heart - Watching The Clock (Tick The Hours Away)
Carl Butler: River Of Tears - Cry You Fool Cry - Your Cold Heart Told Me No - I Know What It Means To Be Lonesome - Jealous Heart - Nothing I'd Rather Do - So Close - If You've Got The Money (I've Got The Time)
