A life-long renegade, Coe has been one of the most colorful and unpredictable characters in country music...or any music. An outlaw pioneer, he didn't score many big hits, although he wrote several big hits for others...including Would You Lay With Me In A Field Of Stone and Take This Job And Shove It. He was also incredibly prolific: during thirteen years with Columbia Records, he released almost two LPs a year. Here, we focus on the years 1982-1985.

Every one of these three CDs not only includes two original LPs, but bonus material where it’s available. Add these CDs to the six already released by Bear Family, and you’re starting to build a collection of one of the most singular and underrated talents of our time.

'Castles In The Sand' and 'Hello In There' comes from 1983. Critics agree that 'Castles In The Sand' is one of the era's most underrated LPs - and one of the most haunted and strange. Coe wrote just three songs on the album, and cowrote another. The title track is an autobiographical tribute to Bob Dylan as one of the two most misunderstood artists of his generation - Coe being the other. Coe emulates Dylan’s voice throughout the verses and sings in his own on the refrains. It's followed by a funky country reading of Dylan's Gotta Serve Somebody with Lacy J. Dalton. Another
highlight: an eerie cover version of the The Ride (a #4 country hit in 1983), in which the ghost of Hank Williams makes an appearance to offer advice. 'Hello In There' has two sides: country and city, and again David Allan mixes his own songs with covers and revivals that reflect his feelings at the time. Perry Como rocks! Perry would have been aghast at the notion, but in the mid-to-late 1950s (when his TV show was the highest-rated show in the USA) he recorded a slew of singles that weren't really rock 'n' roll, but definitely rocked. These immaculately written, produced, and sung records are now heralded as the era's classics, and they include Kewpie Doll, Round And Round, Ko Ko Mo, Tina Marie, Hot Diggity, Catch A Falling Star, Magic Moments, Juke Box Baby, Glendora, Dancin', and Just Born To Be Your Baby. Those songs featured the era's top songwriters like Burt Bacharach, Leiber & Stoller, and Luther Dixon, and accounted for millions of records. Now they're joined by a selection of Perry's other uptempo songs from 1945's Hubba Hubba (Dig You Later) to early '60s hits like Delaware and Caterina. Dick Curless is best known for his mega-hit A Tombstone Every Mile, along with a string of trucker anthems and road songs, recorded since 1950 - 1973. This boxed set continues where Volume 1 (Standard, Event, Tiffany, Allagash, Tower; BCD 15882) ended with Curless’ first session for Capitol in 1970, continuing until his final recordings for the label in 1973. Although less commercially successful, Curless left many surprisingly powerful recordings in the Capitol vaults, including his classic 1972 ‘live’ album, recorded before an enthusiastic Trucker’s Convention in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Perhaps the highlight of this collection is a full disc of previously unreleased solo vocal/guitar recordings made in a Nashville home-studio in 1988. Intended only for use by his family, these astonishing tracks reveal Curless’ full power as a singer and songwriter. Together with Volume 1, this collection offers the most extensive look at Maine’s main contribution to country music. The accompanying book contains many previously unpublished photos and new interviews by Hank Davis offering insight into the personal side of this American Original.
