The !!!! Beat - a new DVD reissue series

'THE !!! BEAT' IS BACK. Once THE !!! BEAT was only a legend. Fans and collectors heard that there was a television show in the mid-1960s that captured the absolute very best of the soul and R&B singers of the day. Some said it was made in Nashville and some said that it was made in Dallas. Musicians remembered working on the show and a few people remembered seeing it, but no one seemed to know what had happened to it. Did the tapes still exist? How many shows were there? Who exactly was on it?

Now, nearly forty years later Bear Family answers all the questions. All the episodes still exist! It really was a fabulous show! It really was in color! It really did feature the absolute best of the soul and R&B acts of the day! And whereas once just fragments of the shows made their way onto bootlegs, now the entire series is available in first-generation quality. It has been a long time coming, but now THE !!! BEAT is back! Soul music is bigger than ever now, just as the original practitioners are dying off or performing way past their prime. Revivalists like Joss Stone often only emphasize how great the originals were in their day, so here is a reminder of what REAL soul music was like from the absolute original masters.

There were 26 THE !!! BEAT shows, and many of the performances were live in the studio with a backup band led by the terrific Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown. Here are just a few of the original soul and R&B stars captured in their prime: Otis Redding; Little Milton, Esther Phillips, Joe Tex, Etta James, Lattimore Brown, Rosco Shelton, Carla Thomas, Freddie King, Barbara Lynn, Johnny Taylor, Maurice & The Radiants, Louis Jordan, Mighty Hannibal, Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry, Robert Parker, Joe Simon, Mitty Collier, Jamo Thomas, Zz Hill, Lou Rawls, Bobby Hebb, Willie Mitchell, Don Bryant, Ovations, Bar-Kays, Percy Sledge, Garnett Mimms, and Sam & Dave. When you’re talking about soul music, it truly comes no better than this!

'Town Hall Party' was California's largest country music barndance, running from early 1952 until early 1961. The show was broadcast every Saturday night from a theatre made up to look like an old barn in the Compton suburb of Los Angeles. Crowds numbering up to 2000 would fill the old Town Hall to see and hear the top country artists of the day. The first hour was broadcast live over KFI and reached a wider audience when NBC syndicated the show on radio. The broadcast was extended to three hours when KTTV-TV televised the show. Jay Stewart (who later hosted the TV quiz show 'Let's Make a Deal'), and Tex Ritter were the MCs and the house band featured a Who’s Who of West Coast country music, including Joe Maphis, Merle Travis, Skeets McDonald, Johnny Bond and Tommy Duncan. Artists appearing on the show included The Collins Kids, Carl Perkins, Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Wanda Jackson and, Johnny Cash. The show was so popular that, in 1958, Columbia Records issued the 'Town Hall Party' album featuring various cast members.

The Collins Kids
BVD 20005 AT

We've heard so much about how great the Collins Kids were on the old Town Hall Party shows, but now there's finally a chance for us all to see just how great they really were. Lorrie looked like an angel and sang like an angel. Larry was among the era's most dynamic performers. He could run, jump, and duckwalk…all while playing a guitar that was almost as big as he was. This DVD really sets the record straight. The Collins Kids might have had no hits, but they were among the brightest stars in early rock 'n' roll. Here, they're mostly playing other peoples' hits, blues hits, and pop classics, but they're never outclassed by the originals.

MERLE TRAVIS
At Town Hall Party
BVD 20008-AT

No one revolutionized country guitar playing like Merle Travis.

He gave his name to an entire style of playing...or picking. He influenced Chet Atkins, and just about every rockabilly guitarist on the planet. There is very little video of Merle Travis in his prime, so Bear Family is very proud to present one of the geniuses of the guitar at the peak of his skills. Guitarists will be able to look at his fingers and try to figure out the deceptive simplicity of his style. Everyone else can just enjoy some relaxed, lyrical, and easy-on-the-ear country music.

These 25 performances are a dazzling mixture of songs that Travis learned growing up in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, together with his hits, and even a tune, Main Street Breakdown, by his disciple, Chet Atkins. Very few artists truly revolutionized their music, but Merle Travis did ! Country guitar playing would never be the same after Travis, and when young country guitarists turned Travis picking into rock 'n' roll, they invented rockabilly guitar. Scotty Moore, Cliff Gallup, James Burton, and others were all disciples of Merle Travis. After Merle, it would never be the same!

Fat Gal - Under The Double Eagle - Deep South - Sourwood Mountain - If You Can't Go Right Don't Go Wrong - Bugle Call Rag - Main Street Breakdown - Blue Bell - Way Down Yonder In New Orleans - Squaws Along The Yukon - Ma, He's Making Eyes At Me - Nine Pound Hammer - I'll See In My Dreams - Cannonball Rag - Won't You Ride In My Little Red Wagon - Ike Everly's Rag - Tuck Me To Sleep In My Old 'Tucky Home - Cincinnati Lou - Back Home In Indiana - House Of David Blues - Squaws Along The Yukon - Cuddle Up A Little Closer - Tuck Me To Sleep In My Old 'Tucky Home - Hominy Grits - Midnight Special

JOHNNY BOND
At Town Hall Party
BVD 20009-AT

When Oklahoma born singer-songwriter Johnny Bond was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999, many were surprised, while industry insiders and fans with a sense of the music's history felt that it was about time. Johnny Bond spent most of his career on the west coast, so many were unaware how versatile and extensive his career was. For thirty years, he was primarily associated with singing cowboys, first with Jimmy Wakely, then with Gene Autry, and later as a business partner of Tex Ritter. As a composer, he wrote enough genuine classics to be elected to the Nashville Songwriters' Hall of Fame. As a musician, his distinctive bass guitar riffs are heard on hundreds of country hits recorded in Hollywood and Los Angeles from the 1940s through the '60s. As a comedian, his droll sense of humor was perfect for his years as sidekick to Autry and his long string of novelty songs and recitations. As a recording artist, he had eight Top 10 hits. Now Bear Family Records is pleased to present his laconic artistry to a new generation. The songs include his signature hit Cimarron, and his standards like Your Old Love Letters, Glad Rags, and Tomorrow Never Comes. There are boogie-woogie songs; honky tonk songs, country blues…in other words, something for everyone who loves vintage country music.

Roll On Mississippi Roll On - Barrelhouse Bessie - Where Can I Go - When The Bloom Is On The Sage - Blue Ridge Mountain Blues - Please Don't Live A Lie - Wild Cat Boogie - Love Gone Cold - One Sweet Letter From You - Cimarron - Mean Mama Boogie -  Drifting And Dreaming (& Merle Travis) - Hang You Head In Shame (& Joe Maphis) - I'll Never Let You Go Little Darling (& Merle - Travis, Cliff Crofford, Billy Mize) - Glad Rags - Louisiana Lucy - Love Song In 32 Bars - I Hang My Head And Cry - Hang Your Head In Shame - I Walk The Line - My Blue Ridge Mountain Home (& Merle Travis) - Near You - You Brought Sorrow To My Heart - Tijuana Jail - The Fool's Paradise - Firewater - Broken Doll - Out In The Cold Again - Jim, Johnny And Jonas - Blue Ridge Mountain Blues - The Long Tall Shadow - Your Old Love Letters - Glad Rags - Those Gone And Left Me Blues - Don't Bite The Hand That's Feeding You - Oklahoma Waltz - We're Diggin' For Gold (& Cliff Crofford & Billy Mize) - Red River Valley - Put Me To Bed - Tomorrow Never Comes - Train Whistle Blues - Put A Little Sweetenin' In Your Love - Lay It On The Line - Cimarron (& Lee Maphis & Joe Maphis) - Blue Hawaii (& Rose L. COLLINS KIDS
At Town Hall Party, Vol.2

DVD
BVD 20010 AT

For anyone who enjoys the raw energy of Fifties rock 'n' roll, Bear Family's series of 'Town Hall Party' DVDs are a cornucopia of cool! More footage has turned up than we previously believed existed, so we are happy to present The Collins Kids, Round Two. For those who weren't lucky enough to be in the audience at Los Angeles' weekly TV show, Town Hall Party, in the 1950s, we'll remind you that the Collins Kids were teenage Oklahomans who'd come to Los Angeles in search of fame and maybe fortune. They were high energy, exciting early rock 'n' rollers, underscoring that Fifties rock music was for, by, and about kids. Lorrie's stunning good looks and sultry vocals were combined with Larry's stinging double-neck guitar licks and manic stage antics. They were very visual, and thus better suited to DVD than CD.

This DVD showcases nearly every Collins Kids 'Town Hall Party' appearance in 1959. True to the Bear Family tradition, we have offered everything in the vaults. Some highlights include LaVern Baker's R&B tune So High, So Low , the Lloyd Price hit Stagger Lee (the Collins Kids had an uncanny ability at picking great cover tunes) and Larry's blistering guitar attack on Ramrod and the bonus track Mutt And Jeff Boogie with Joe Maphis. Many say that Larry invented surf guitar, and on the evidence here, they're right.

JOE MAPHIS
At Town Hall Party

"People said they didn't watch country music on TV (but) when it came to Saturday night and 'Town Hall Party,' Beverly Hills would have their eyes on it. A lot of my studio calls came from somebody watching it and seeing me there." ---- Joe Maphis 1981

Joe Maphis's presence on 'Town Hall Party' made him a guitar legend. As the show's bandleader, his dazzling, flamboyant work was prominent behind other acts and in his frequent solo spots. Watching 'Town Hall,' Ozzie Nelson decided to recruit Joe to back his son Ricky on his first, pre -James Burton Imperial sessions. THP brought Joe studio work including film soundtracks for films like 'Thunder Road' and 'God's Little Acre.' Maphis's THP performances inspired countless rockabilly and surf guitar innovators including surf guitar godfather Dick Dale. Joe's tutelage made Larry Collins of the Collins Kids a phenomenal guitarist in his own right. Now, you can see why the Hollywood elite flocked to Joe. This is Maphis at his wildest, using his doubleneck Mosrite guitar as a musical Uzi. Taken from September 1958 to December, 1959 performances (the show went off the air in 1960) the 21 performances feature:

Maphis favorites Fire On the Strings, Katy Warren Breakdown and live versions of his Columbia recordings of Moonshot and Short Recess.
Joe Maphis-Merle Travis performances of Wildwood Flower, Under the Double Eagle and Chet Atkins's Main Street Breakdown and a three way jam between Maphis, Travis and Larry Collins
Joe and Rose Lee Maphis vocal duets on Billy Grammer's hit Gotta Travel On and Bill Monroe's Molly And Tenbrooks.
Instrumental fireworks between Joe, THP fiddler Katy Warren, trumpeter Cliff Crofford and musically talented comic Quincy Snodgrass.
A new essay by Rich Kienzle.

Collins Kids
At Town Hall Party, Vol.3

DVD
BVD 20015 AT

This third Volume (together with the previous volumes) features nearly every Collins Kids Town Hall Party appearance from 1959. True to the Bear Family tradition, we have offered everything in the vaults. Some highlights include the Collins Kids' great take on Frankie Ford's Sea Cruise, Ricky Nelson's I Got A Feeling (Lorrie dated Ricky for several years, and appeared on his TV show), and the Coasters' Charlie Brown. In addition, Larry tears up his doubleneck Mosrite guitar on Johnny B. Goode, and the twin guitar showstopper Rockin' Gypsy.
Many say that Larry invented surf guitar, and on the evidence here, they're right!

Marty Robbins
BVD 20007 AT

Marty Robbins was a reticent television performer. His appearances during the early part of his career were few. So this is a treasure trove. Here are performances and interviews dating from the heart of Marty's golden era. As an added bonus, we catch Tompall and the Glaser Brothers at the dawn of their long career. Marty was perhaps the most versatile singer in country music, and these long lost performances bear that out. He runs the gamut from Hawaiian songs to western ballads to teen pop to classic country. He does it all effortlessly, and he does it all superbly. If you weren't lucky enough to be at the old Town Hall Party in February and October 1959, we'll take you there!
