JENKS TEX CARMAN - 2 CDs and 1 DVD:

Jenks 'Tex' Carman was a true American original. His unique style of hillbilly hula music would never have made a dent in Nashville, but on the west coast he was embraced. Playing a bizarre style of Hawaiian steel - guitar, with little sense of timing, tuning, meter or rhythm, Jenks 'Tex' Carman was on a musical island all of his own. Jenks 'Tex' Carman brought such diverse - influences as Hawaiian steel guitar, vaudeville, cowboy ballads, the 'punk' attitude - of rockabilly and acoustic country blues together in an act that was as novel as it was perverse.

These two new CDs contain the complete recordings that Carman did for Sage & Sand Records in the late 1950s, 63 tracks in all!
On the DVD, you will see many of Carman’s live performances on the 'Town Hall Party' television show backed by such legends as Joe Maphis, Merle Travis, - Quincy Snodgrass and the rest of the 'Town Hall Party' band. You will see how real West Coast country music used to be played - loose, on the edge, ragged but right. Rockabilly fans will be pleased to note that Carman is backed by - the 'Town Hall Party' television show musicians on these CDs and DVD. Amazing rockabilly guitarists Joe Maphis and Roy Lanham (both of whom have their own solo - Bear Family CDs) contribute some amazingly hot rockabilly guitar solos to these recordings.
If you’re a fan of the other 'Town Hall Party' artists such - as the Collins Kids, Joe Maphis, Johnny Bond and Skeets McDonald then these CDs and DVD are a must!

BCD 16325 CR (counts as a double CD for S&H purposes)

Bear Family Records is proud to present the most eagerly awaited entry in its series of Studio Outtakes releases that includes the Everly Brothers and Janis Martin. Johnny Cash is an American legend. Until now, alternate takes of his Sun recordings have appeared scattered on numerous sources, unsystematically issued all over the world. Acknowledging the importance of alternative versions of his iconic Sun recordings, Bear Family has issued for the first time a collection of every Johnny Cash alternate take known to exist in the Sun archives.
These recordings, many of which have never been previously released, offer the deepest insight yet into Johnny Cash's formative years at the Sun label. Collectors and fans will want to make side-by -side comparisons with the originally released versions of these songs. Bear Family have facilitated this by grouping alternate takes together and presenting them in chronological order according to most up -to-date research. Whether it's the thrill of hearing a previously unknown lyric, a slightly different instrumental sound or eavesdropping on a vocal or guitar fluff, this collection offers the most penetrating look beyond the famous master recordings made by a man who has become a towering figure in American music. Cash Perkins

JOHNNY CASH & CARL PERKINS
I Walk The Line/Little Fauss And Big Halsy
BCD 16130 AH

Johnny Cash’s two soundtrack albums have become collectors’ items over the years. In 1970, he and Carl Perkins wrote the themesong and incidental music for the cult Robert Redford biker movie ‘Little Fauss And Big Halsy’, and Johnny wrote the music for a John Frankenheimer movie originally titled ‘September Country’, then re-titled ‘I Walk The Line’. Rather than recycle old recordings, Johnny and Carl made all new recordings for these two soundtracks, - even if a few of the songs were of older vintage. Although the songs work best in the context of the movies, both albums work excellently as standalone music. The songs for ‘I Walk The Line’ in particular, capture the torment of a small town sheriff (Gregory Peck ) tortured by his love for a young girl (Tuesday Weld). The Bear Family reissue CD comprises both these long-deleted albums on one CD.

I Walk The Line:
Flesh And Blood - I Walk The Line - Hungry - This Town - This Side Of The Law - Flesh And Blood (Instrumental) - ‘Cause I Love You - ‘Cause I Love You (String Instrumental) - The World’s Gonna Fall On You - Face Of Despair - Standing On The Promises/Amazing Grace:
Little Fauss And Big Halsy
Rollin’ Free - Ballad Of Little Fauss And Big Halsy - Ballad Of Little Fauss And Big Halsy (Instrumental) - 706 Union - Little Man - Little Man (Instrumental) - Wanted Man - Rollin’ Free (Instrumental) - True Love Is Greater Than Friendship (Carl Perkins) - Movin’

Carter Cash

UNE CARTER & JOHNNY CASH
It’s All In The Family
BCD 16132 AR

June’s last great solo album was ‘Appalachian Pride’, dating from 1976, now reissued by Bear Family. Despite the fact that she grew up on the road with her famous mother, Maybelle, June has always been intensely proud of her family’s roots in Appalachia. That was never more evident than on these recordings where she lends her personal stamp to songs like East Virginia Blues, Another Broken Hearted Girl and Big Balls In Nashville.

‘Appalachian Pride’ has been rounded out with Johnny Cash’s children album, ‘The Johnny Cash Children Album’ on which Johnny (with some help of his family: June Carter Cash and Rosey Nix) makes music for everyone’s family. The titles include: I Gotta Boy (And His Name Is John) (& JUNE CARTER CASH); Little Green Fountain (& JUNE CARTER CASH & ROSEY NIX), The Mystery Of Number Five and Ben Dewberry’s Final Run. Here’s a rarely heard side of Johnny Cash. The Man in Black lightens up!

JUNE CARTER CASH: Losin’ You - The Shadow Of A Lady - Gatsby’s Restaurant - Once Before I Die (& JERRY HENSLEY) - The L&N Don’t Stop Here Anymore - East Virginia Blues - Gone - Appalachian Pride - I Love You Sweetheart - Another Broken Hearted Girl - Big Balls In Nashville - JOHNNY CASH: Nasty Dan - One And One Makes Two - I Gotta Boy (And His Name Is John) (& JUNE CARTER CASH) - Little Magic Glasses - Miss Tara - Dinosaur Song - Tiger Whitehead - Call Of The Wild - Little Green Fountain (& JUNE CARTER CASH & ROSEY NIX) - Old Shep - The Timber Man - The Mystery Of Number Five - Ben Dewberry’s Final Run - Grandfather’s Clock - Abacida - Why Is A Fire Engine Red? - The Very Biggest Circus Of Them All

Cash Traveling

JOHNNY CASH
Traveling Cash - An Imaginary Journey
BCD 16820-AH

To commemorate the success of the Johnny Cash bio-pic Walk The Line, Bear Family Records presents its own journey through the musical life of Johnny Cash. Like the critically acclaimed movie, our story also begins in Folsom Prison. But unlike the movie, there is not a word of truth in our story. Inspired by an idea from Bear Family's Richard Weize, music -historian Hank Davis has created a fictionalized Traveler, and told the imaginary story of his life based on 20 of Johnny Cash’s best Sun recordings.

Join our Traveler as he sits alone in his cell with the Folsom Prison Blues, remembering how he drove his true love Katy down a Wide Open Road, forcing her into the arms of a Mean Eyed Cat, and dooming himself to forever ride the Blue Train. You'll also learn who that 'Man' in Reno was, and why the Traveler shot him "just to watch him die." With tongue firmly in cheek, we present this concept album that was never released during Johnny Cash's lifetime, but would have been a worthy companion piece to his efforts like 'Ride This Train.' Contains 20 original Sun recordings, including an undubbed version of Guess Things Happen That Way.

Folsom Prison Blues - Katy Too - My Treasure - Mean Eyed Cat - There You Go - Cry, Cry, Cry - Wide Open Road - Come In Stranger - Big River - Fools Hall Of Fame - Port Of Lonely Hearts - Train Of Love - I Walk The Line - Don't Make Me Go - Blue Train - Hey Porter - Give My Love To Rose - Guess Things Happen That Way (undubbed Master) - Life Goes On - Doin' My Time

Ernie Chaffin

ERNIE CHAFFIN
Laughin' & Jokin' - The Sun Years
CD with 44-page booklet
BCD 16780 AH

Sun Records had some certifiable good-ole-boys on its roster of artists -- men like Carl Perkins, Charlie Feathers and Warren Smith. They never outgrew their love of country music but, one way or another, each of them made the transition to rockabilly and won wide acclaim for doing so.

The easy transition from country to rockabilly doesn’t always work. At Sun Records, that exception was named Ernie Chaffin. Chaffin was another good ole country boy, born in Northern Mississippi. He traveled to the Gulf coast as a teenager to get his start in the music business. By 1956, he had found his way to 706 Union Avenue in Memphis. But despite pressure from Sam Phillips, Jack Clement and Bill Justis, Chaffin never found his way to full-bore rockabilly.

What he did find was a country sound so unique and starkly beautiful that Sam Phillips -- a big fan of originality -- had no choice but to let Ernie Chaffin go his own way in the studio. Chaffin’s first two records for Sun are as haunting and unusual as anything recorded for the label. Nothing sounds like them -- before or since. The reissue of these four sides would be reason enough to rejoice, but we have also brought you previously unissued alternate takes of these songs, along with a sample of every title Chaffin recorded for or at Sun. These include previously unreleased Gulfport demos and undubbed bed tracks that were later cluttered with voices for release, as Sun moved its focus to crossover pop/country hits.

This long-awaited disc comes with a detailed biography of Chaffin by Sun historian Hank Davis. It includes previously unpublished interviews shedding new light on Chaffin’s life and career. We also include vintage photos of Chaffin and his mentor Pewee Maddux. As a special bonus, the CD contains a previously unissued interview with Ernie Chaffin, himself, originally recorded as research for the Sun Country box (BFX 15211, deleted). You’ll hear about Ernie’s musical background and experiences at Sun -- in his own voice!

If, like many Sun fans and collectors, you were haunted by Feelin’ Low and I’m Lonesome, this will be a Bear Family release you’ve got to own: The ultimate and long -overdue Ernie Chaffin Sun collection.

Feelin' Low - Lonesome For My Baby - I'm Lonesome - Laughin' And Jokin' - Born To Lose - (Nothing Can Change) My Love For You - Don't Ever Leave Me - Miracle Of You - The Heart Of Me - Linda - I Walk Alone - Born To Lose (alt) - Feelin' Low (alt -1) - My Heart Tells Me - No Fool Like An Old Fool - Be Faithful To Me - I'm Lonesome (alt -1) - Laughin' And Jokin' (alt) - Miracle Of You (undubbed master) - I Walk Alone (alt) - Got You On My Mind - The Heart of Me (alt) - My Love For You (undubbed master) - Lonesome For My Baby (alt) - Born To Lose (undubbed master) - I'm Lonesome (alt-2) - Feelin' Low (alt-2) - Interview

Leon Chappel

LEON CHAPPEL
Automatic Mama
BCD 16254 AH

Leon Chappel (1909-1962) is one of the most compelling and unusual major label recording artists of the early 1950s, a hard-to-classify, almost anachronistic artist whose, spare and loose, blues- dominated recordings were perfect for beer joint jukeboxes. There was an earthy feel of prewar hokum and early western swing to Chappel’s 1950-1953 Capitol sides , and no wonder: his recording career went back to 1932, when he performed under his real name, Leon Chappelear. With Bob and Joe Shelton, performing as the Lone Star Cowboys, he cut seminal versions of classics like Deep Elem Blues and Just Because, then recorded extensively for Decca with his own band, Leon’s Lone Star Cowboys, one of the earliest and jazziest western swing groups.

Chappel’s postwar recordings combined his sophisticated background with a rural East Texas feel for spare, lowdown blues. The results have continued to fascinate country, western swing, hillbilly boogie, even rockabilly fans almost a half century on. Collected here are all of Chappel’s 1950-1953 Capitol recordings, including six unissued tracks and such memorable sides as True Blue Papa (later covered by Texas honky-tonker Frankie Miller), True Detective and Double Up And Catch Up.

You Hear Me Talkin’ - True Blue Papa - Keep Him Satisfied - Slow Down Sweet Mama - Streamlined Gal - Tell Me Mama - I’m A Do-Right Daddy - Take Your Time Mama - - (I’m A) Long Gone Doggie - Gonna Turn You Loose - You’re A Lovin’ Woman - Little Bitty Blues - Don’t Dog Me ‘Round - True Detective - Automatic Mama - Lowdown Lonesome Blues - Booger Blues - Just A Blue-Eyed Blonde - Double Up And Catch Up - What Makes You Hesitate - Sweethearts Or Friends - How Come You Do Me Like You Do - New Do-Right Daddy - I’m Gettin’ Mighty Tired - A True Man’s Hard To Find - I’m Checkin’ You Out

EDDIE CLETRO
Flying Saucer Boogie
CD with 36-page booklet
BCD 16510 AH

Eddie Cletro had one of the most unusual careers in western music. Based in Los Angeles, he had no hit records, but he did have a great voice and a great band -- the Roundup Boys -- and several of his recordings have long been highly sought after among collectors, particularly the great, rocking double -sider from 1952, First Class, Second Hand Woman -- b/w Flying Saucer Boogie. Cletro achieved his greatest popularity in the early to mid-1950s, at a point when western music and western swing bands were generally out of favor, but he and the Roundup Boys went from strength to strength in this transitional era.

'Flying Saucer Boogie'gathers all of Eddie Cletro’s recordings for Lariat, Imperial, Sage and Sand, including the classic, First Class, Second Hand Woman, Daniel Boone and others. ROSEMARY CLOONEY
Come On-A My House
LP Size 7-CD Box with Book
BCD 15895 GK

Ever since an unlikely novelty song called Come On-A My House propelled her to overnight stardom in the early 1950s, Rosemary Clooney has held a place as a beloved icon of American popular song. In movies like ‘White Christmas’, on television, in concert and club dates and above all, on recording, Clooney’s warmth and extraordinary musical skill have captivated audiences for the second half of the 20th Century. The sound of her voice (like Ella Fitzgerald’s) remains one of the most instantly recognizable in the world.

Here is a veritable Clooney candy store. This first boxed set of three (comprising our complete anthology of Clooney’s classic recordings) contains not only the hits that brought her to the top of the charts, including Come On-A My House, Botch-A-Me, Tenderly, Hey There, This Ole House and Mambo Italiano.

It is also a mother lode of rarely glimpsed treasures: collaborations with Harry James, Marlene Dietrich and Frank Sinatra; Rosemary’s earliest recorded beginnings, as the older half of the Clooney Sisters in their 1940s days as girl singers with the Tony Pastor band. Also, forgotten ballads, glorious standards and a cache of country tunes. A must-have, whether for loyal fans from the Eisenhower years, or new generations who have only recently discovered the powerful artistry of one of the greatest popular singers of all time.

Included are seven carefully remastered CDs, plus a 76-page hardcover book, with a biography by Deborah Grace Winer, and a discography by Richard Weize.
