Until now, alternate takes of his Sun recordings have appeared scattered on numerous sources, unsystematically issued all over the world. Acknowledging the importance of alternative versions of his iconic Sun recordings, Bear Family has issued for the first time a collection of every Johnny Cash alternate take known to exist in the Sun archives.
These recordings, many of which have never been previously released, offer the deepest insight yet into Johnny Cash's formative years at the Sun label. Collectors and fans will want to make side-by -side comparisons with the originally released versions of these songs. Johnny Cash’s two soundtrack albums have become collectors’ items over the years. In 1970, he and Carl Perkins wrote the themesong and incidental music for the cult Robert Redford biker movie ‘Little Fauss And Big Halsy’, and Johnny wrote the music for a John Frankenheimer movie originally titled ‘September Country’, then re-titled ‘I Walk The Line’. Rather than recycle old recordings, Johnny and Carl made all new recordings for these two soundtracks, - even if a few of the songs were of older vintage. Although the songs work best in the context of the movies, both albums work excellently as standalone music. The songs for ‘I Walk The Line’ in particular, capture the torment of a small town sheriff (Gregory Peck ) tortured by his love for a young girl (Tuesday Weld). The Bear Family reissue CD comprises both these long-deleted albums on one CD.

Like the critically acclaimed movie, our story also begins in Folsom Prison. But unlike the movie, there is not a word of truth in our story. Inspired by an idea from Bear Family's Richard Weize, music -historian Hank Davis has created a fictionalized Traveler, and told the imaginary story of his life based on 20 of Johnny Cash’s best Sun recordings.
Join our Traveler as he sits alone in his cell with the Folsom Prison Blues, remembering how he drove his true love Katy down a Wide Open Road, forcing her into the arms of a Mean Eyed Cat, and dooming himself to forever ride the Blue Train. With tongue firmly in cheek, we present this concept album that was never released during Johnny Cash's lifetime, but would have been a worthy companion piece to his efforts like 'Ride This Train.'
