Narvel Felts started his professional career in 1956, making his first studio recordings in 1957 at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee for Sun with Jack Clement producing. From these sessions, Did You Tell Me (aka You Don’t Care) and My Babe have become rockabilly favorites. His Mercury sessions from 1957 and 1958 produced his first released items, Kiss-A-Me-Baby, Foolish Thoughts and the storming sax-led instrumental Rocket Ride. 1959 and 1960 saw Narvel’s first chart success with Three Thousand Miles and Honey Love on Pink. All the Sun, Mercury, and Pink masters have been assembled alongside the 1960 MGM session for this new CD that features all the early studio cuts of Narvel Felts.

Lester Flatt's RCA recordings are among the finest and most underrated recordings in Bluegrass music. For many years, Lester had been unhappy with Flatt & Scruggs' direction, so after the act dissolved in 1968, he reverted to his first love, traditional music. He recruited a top notch band that included among others Roland White, Marty Stuart, Bobby Osborne, and Josh Graves, and went back to playing the small auditoriums and venues that he and Earl had played at the start of their career. It was a sweet return to basics in every sense.
This 6-CD boxed set contains all of Lester's recordings for Columbia and RCA between 1969 and 1974, including his duets with Mac Wiseman, as well as 18 Flatt & Scruggs recordings that could not be located earlier. Here is the complete Vanderbilt Concert from March 19, 1974, with BILL MONROE. The box contains a total of 148 songs.

No one would have bet much on the chances of Lester Flatt and Bill Monroe appearing on the same stage in the 1970s. Bluegrass patriarch Monroe was known to harbor grudges for decades, and hadn't forgiven Flatt and his then-partner, Earl Scruggs, for leaving the Blue Grass Boys in 1948. Neither had Monroe gotten over his annoyance when Flatt & Scruggs joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1953. But in 1971, Lester Flatt appeared at Monroe's Bean Blossom Festival, and in 1974, Monroe recorded again with Lester Flatt at a memorable concert held at Nashville's Vanderbilt University. That concert, first released in its entirety on Bear Family's exclusive boxed set, 'Flatt On Victor,' now makes its debut as a single CD. The twenty-five songs run the gamut of the very best of Bluegrass and traditional country music: Little Cabin Home On The Hill, Salty Dog Blues, Nine Pound Hammer, Get In Line Brother, Uncle Pen, Muleskinner Blues, and of course, Foggy Mountain Breakdown. Among those in Lester Flatt's band on that March night in 1974 were fifteen-year-old Marty Stuart on mandolin, and now Marty shares his recollections of that night. Bluegrass is more popular than ever, and this ranks among the greatest Bluegrass events of all time!

Who said "They ain't making Jews like Jesus anymore"? It was, of course, country music's resident iconoclast Kinky Friedman. These days, you'll find more Kinky Friedman books in bookstores than Kinky Friedman records in record stores. We're trying to change that by issuing his historic second and third LPs together on one CD.

The second LP included the now-classic They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore, as well as Kinky's version of Billy Swan's hit song Lover Please (Rock-a-Billy Swan had served an apprenticeship with Kinky). By the time of the third LP, Kinky was on Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue and had moved to Dylan's record label. Dylan gave him a song he had yet to record, Catfish (dedicated to the great baseball pitcher, Catfish Hunter), Eric Clapton was on hand to play guitar, and Ringo Starr did a narration on one song. It was an all-star event, and, like the second LP, has never been reissued in Europe.
