JOE MAPHIS Flying Fingers BCD 16103-AH
Joe Maphis was one of country’s first ‘flash’ guitarists, able to fire notes machine-gun style from his custom-built doubleneck electric guitar. His twangy tone and dazzling cascades of notes had far-reaching implications, and surf guitarists including Dick Dale considered him as a major influence. Rockabilly revivalists like Deke Dickerson and others have used Joe’s playing as a beacon of inspiration, and with good reason. Rockabilly guitar legend Larry Collins of the Collins Kids, another influential guitarist, was one of Joe’s musical proteges. As a Virginia teenager, Joe drank in Maybelle Carter’s guitar work, learned mandolin, bass fiddle and banjo as well and became one of the first guitarists anywhere to flatpick fiddle tunes on guitar. In addition he recorded both vocals (with his wife Rose Lee Maphis) and instrumentals for Columbia from 1953 through 1960. Hollywood producers who saw him perform as a member of the cast of the Southern California country TV show ‘Town Hall Party’ in the 1950s hired him to play all types of recording sessions. Joe played on Ricky Nelson’s first Imperial album with James Burton and on hits like Be Bop Baby and Waitin’ In School. His guitar graced the soundtracks to the classic Robert Mitchum moonshine movie ‘Thunder Road’, as well as ‘God’s Little Acre’ and others. His Columbia instrumentals were never hits, most were only available on the rare 1957 ‘Fire On The Strings’ LP. This one CD includes 24 of the awe-inspiring Maphis instrumentals (22 from Columbia, and 2 from Republic), including the duets with Larry Collins. After the first play your CD player will never be the same. Watch it!

LEON McAULIFFE Take Off, And More BCD 16854-AH
Leon McAuliffe, the steel guitar-playing Tulsa bandleader, was one of the biggest names in western swing... a star long before he even had his own band. As a member of the legendary Bob Wills' Texas Playboys, he was not only in the best western swing group ever but also in one of the most progressive and blues oriented. McAuliffe carried on in the same vein when he went out on his own. In 1957, McAuliffe signed to Dot. He stayed just over a year, but those recordings have always carried a legendary mystique and have long been sought after by collectors. Bear Family has gathered all of them in this collection, including two previously unissued sides and many classic tracks that have been unavailable since their original issue. Included are fantastic versions of McAuliffe signature tunes like Steel Guitar Rag, Panhandle Rag, Take It Away Leon, the rocking Johnny Cake Road, the hard driving instrumental classic Honky-Tonk, and jumping swing blues like One O’Clock Jump and Summit Ridge Drive. Plus... of course... western swing standbys like Maiden’s Prayer! Beside McAuliffe’s own influential and exciting steel guitar work, he’s ably joined by legendary musicians like Cecil Brower and Keith Coleman on fiddle, guitarist Billy Dozier, saxophonist Rudy Martin, pianist Pee Wee Calhoun and bassist Teddy Adams. Although the emphasis is on instrumental selections, there are several excellent vocals by McAuliffe himself.
Take It Away, Leon - Steel Guitar Polka - My Love - Lone Star Rag - South Rampart Street Parade - Honky Tonk - Silver Bells - Sweetheart - Summit Ridge Drive - Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star - Along The Navajo Trail - One O'Clock Jump - Hear Me Now - Maiden's Prayer - What's The Use - Under The Double Eagle - Steel Guitar Rag - Carroll County Blues - Blue Man's Blues - Panhandle Waltz - Panhandle Rag - Cimarron Rag - Red Skin Rag - Little Girl Ask Your Mama - Johnny Cake Road - There's That Smile Again

Who was the most commercially successful American poet/singer-songwriter of the 20th century? The answer is: Rod McKuen, Now, for the first time anywhere, his complete 1960s RCA Victor recordings are compiled in a lavish boxed set of 7 compact discs.
Rod McKuen's three dozen books of poetry have been published in eleven languages, sold 65 million copies, and placed him securely among the most popular poets of all time. He's also worked as a rodeo cowboy, lumberjack, and Bmovie actor.
'If You Go Away' concentrates on four fruitful years of McKuen's recording and songwriting career. Since the 1950s, he estimates, more than 200 albums have been released under his name, and selections from his catalog of more than 1,500 compositions have been recorded by singers including Ray Charles, Petula Clark, Johnny Cash, and Frank Sinatra. This collection gathers Rod's six original albums for RCA Victor, released between 1965-'68, plus an incredible lode of unreleased master and alternate takes, demos, and even a few 'live' recordings.

You'll hear duets with Glenn Yarbrough and Don Ho; and songs written especially for (though never recorded by) The Beach Boys and SSgt. Barry Sadler.
The enclosed album-sized hardcover book includes an essay by Todd Everett and track-by track comments by Rod himself, discussing the material on the album; plus quotes from past and present associates as varied as Yarbrough and comic Phyllis Diller, both important figures in establishing Rod's career; and numerous photographs and other treasures from Rod's personal archives.

ROGER MILLER A Man - Like Me - The Early Years Of Roger Miller BCD 16760-AH
Everybody knows Roger Miller's Mercury Records hits of the 1960s, like King Of The Road, Dang Me, Chug-A-Lug, etc. Some even know about his pre-Mercury recordings for RCA (especially those who bought Bear Family's 'King Of The Road' CD), but before now, there hasn't been a comprehensive collection of his very first recordings. In fact, no one was even sure who he'd recorded for and when…until Bear Family began researching!
Bear Family once again steps up to the plate, providing a complete picture of the early years of Miller's career, from his 1957 first recordings for Starday, through his two Decca singles in 1959, to his 'sound-alike' recordings he did for Starday in 1960, this is essential listening for fans of real honky-tonk country music.
Miller was a country songwriter of the highest caliber, and these sides may reveal a side of him that you didn't know before. Songs like A Man Like Me and The Wrong Kind Of Girl are some of the best country music to come out of Nashville in the 1950s.

Lester Flatt & Bill Monroe Live At Vanderbilt BCD 16614 AH
No one would have bet much on the chances of Lester Flatt and Bill Monroe appearing on the same stage in the 1970s. Bluegrass patriarch Monroe was known to harbor grudges for decades, and hadn't forgiven Flatt and his then-partner, Earl Scruggs, for leaving the Blue Grass Boys in 1948. Neither had Monroe gotten over his annoyance when Flatt & Scruggs joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1953. But in 1971, Lester Flatt appeared at Monroe's Bean Blossom Festival, and in 1974, Monroe recorded again with Lester Flatt at a memorable concert held at Nashville's Vanderbilt University. That concert, first released in its entirety on Bear Family's exclusive boxed set, 'Flatt On Victor,' now makes its debut as a single CD. The twenty-five songs run the gamut of the very best of Bluegrass and traditional country music: Little Cabin Home On The Hill, Salty Dog Blues, Nine Pound Hammer, Get In Line Brother, Uncle Pen, Muleskinner Blues, and of course, Foggy Mountain Breakdown. Among those in Lester Flatt's band on that March night in 1974 were fifteen-year-old Marty Stuart on mandolin, and now Marty shares his recollections of that night. Bluegrass is more popular than ever, and this ranks among the greatest Bluegrass events of all time!

CHARLIE MONROE I'm Old Kentucky Bound - His Recordings 1938 - 1956 4-CD boxed set (LP-size) with 60-page book BCD 16808-DK
- The complete Bluebird, RCA Victor and Decca recordings (1938 – 1956) - 7 previously unissued masters - Previously unissued live recordings from 1955 and 1956 at New River Ranch
The other Monroe brother! Bill Monroe split from his older brother, Charlie, and went on to invent bluegrass music. This is the story of what happened to Charlie after that rift. Striking out on his own, Charlie developed his own ample talents rooted in his affable personality. His group, the Kentucky Pardners, like Bill’s Blue Grass Boys, could operate at high speeds without discomfort. Though Charlie might not have conquered as much new musical territory as Bill, his music had a vivid personal sound. And he scored some hits, notably Bringing In The Georgia Mail. Charlie's voice was high, sweet and animated, radiating boundless good cheer that buoyed the spirits of his wartime audiences and sustained his popularity through the 1940s. Because Charlie's music has rarely been available since then, he's been unjustly consigned to historical neglect as little more than Bill's occasional sparring partner. Until now. In 2002, Bear Family added all the Monroe Brothers material to a comprehensive Bill Monroe collection (BCD 16399). This collection is very much the companion to that highly-praised volume, and we may now enjoy and re-evaluate Charlie Monroe's recorded music from 1938 to 1956... including every recording for RCA/Bluebird and Decca. Charlie knew how to create inspired music on his own terms, and with this historic release, Bear Family completes its comprehensive Monroe series, making all the studio recordings of both Monroe Brothers available on state-of-the-art sets with skillfully restored sound, authoritative annotations, and original photographs. A bonus disc features live performances from 1955 and 1956 at the New River Ranch recorded by Mike Seeger

ROD MORRIS Bimbo BCD 16193 - AH
Rod Morris is best remembered these days - if he’s remembered at all - as a songwriter who penned Jim Reeves’ early hit Bimbo, Slim Whitman’s North Wind, and Little Jimmy Dickens’ I’m Coming Over Tonight. But he was an engaging and often exciting performer in his own right, cutting excellent western swing-tinged mainstream country with his Missourians on Capitol from 1951-54. He also has attracted the attention of rockabilly aficionados for later recordings on his own Ludwig label. Bear Family has collected all 24 of Morris’ Capitol sides here for the first time, which will hopefully help rescue the singer from undeserved obscurity. It’s hot, energetic early ‘50s country dance music, with great songs and hot guitars . Included are the original version of Bimbo, excellent sides like I Feel Like A Wreck (Looking For Someplace To Happen) and Free, Wise And Twenty One, plus the original version Free White And Twenty One, as well as bonus tracks from the Ludwig years, the rocking Alabama Jail House Blues and Ghost Of Casey Jones plus I Lived With The Angels, Bony Eyes Of Blue and Heartbreak Letter.
