FESS PARKER Great American Heroes BCD 16113-AH
Fess Parker was an actor, but he also recorded the original version of The Ballad Of Davy Crockett and that got him in the Top Five in 1955. Fess was playing Davy Crockett in the TV series at the time, and went on to play Daniel Boone. In between his acting assignments, he made records. This CD is a re-issue of his RCA Victor album ‘Great American Heroes’ recorded in 1964. In them, Fess celebrates all kinds of American heroes from George Washington to the famous explorers Lewis & Clark. History was never this much fun in school! Included is a 48-page booklet.

RAY PETERSON Tell Laura I Love Her CD Digipac with 44-page booklet BCD 15880 AR
The late Ray Peterson was the ultimate voice of teenage longing and heartbreak. During his early '60s peak, the four and a half octave range, the dramatic flair, and the naked empathy were all unique. Re-mastered for the first time on CD, all of Peterson’s highest charted recordings for RCA and Dunes including his smash hit Tell Laura I Love Her, the Baker Knight penned The Wonder Of You (a hit later for Elvis Presley) and the Phil Spector produced Corinna Corinna are here. "It was a real thrill hearing 'Tell Laura I Love Her' as sung by Ray, with such heart, like it happened to him, or Tommy was his brother," marvels songwriter Jeff Barry. "Ray was an artist who sang the words - he let his innate talent take care of the notes."
Peterson’s story, along with newly discovered information, is told by entertainer/essayist Johnny Vallis in a remarkably informative booklet that boasts both a detailed discography and a generous selection of photos. Jam packed with 31 stellar recordings, many fan favorites are re-released for the first time, all with the famous Bear Family sound. More than just a hits collection; this superior package provides a fitting retrospective to an often overlooked talent.

ORVAL PROPHET The Travellin’ Kind BCD 16376 -AH
They called him ‘The Canadian Ploughboy’ and that’s precisely what he was. In fact, his unwillingness to leave the family farm in eastern Ontario, Canada adversely affected his chances of making it in the highly competitive world of early Fifties country music. There’s no doubt that Orval had the talent. He was signed to Decca, Nashville in 1951 and recorded several singles for the label including one that became a big Canadian hit, Judgement Day Express. The sound was modelled closely on Hank Snow, but Orval made the records uniquely his own. In 1957, Orval returned to Nashville to record two sessions as ‘Johnny Six’. His recording of Mademoiselle also became a big Canadian hit, and a local hit in the USA, but once again Orval retreated back to eastern Ontario to become a local legend ... and nothing more. This set gathers all of Orval’s 1950s recordings. The sound on the early songs is tight, rocking Fifties country very much in the Hank Snow tradition. The’˜Johnny Six recordings are more countrypolitan, but still definitely country. You might not have heard of him before, so be prepared for how good he is!

The Prowlers with Les Vogt BCD 16669 AH
Formed in Vancouver, Canada in 1955, the Fraserview Drifters performed songs by Hank Snow, Frankie Laine, Homer & Jethro, etc., but with the arrival of rock and roll, they abruptly changed direction. Now influenced by Elvis Presley, they changed their name to suit their new style. Now they became The Prowlers, after a popular radio program in Vancouver (a dee-jay named Jack Cullen had a show called the Owl Prowl). The band played with Gene Vincent, Bill Haley, Earl Bostic and Ivory Joe Hunter, and were one of Canada's earliest rock 'n' roll bands. They were playing rock 'n' roll as early as April 1956. The CD also contains all the solo recordings by the Prowlers' lead singer, Les Vogt. In Vancouver, Les had a number 1 song with The Blamers. It knocked Elvis's It's Now Or Never out of the top spot back in 1960. Later, it was released in the US on Apt Records, and achieved some local success on the west coast. For rock 'n' roll fans, this is an undiscovered gem. Raw, exciting first generation rock 'n' roll by someone you've probably never heard of. There are still sweet surprises after all these years!

LEROY PULLINS I'm A Nut BCD 16625-AH
Many years ago, Bear Family issued an LP of Leroy Pullins' Kapp recordings. Long out-of-print, that LP created a steady demand for his recordings on CD. To date, nothing has been released on CD, not even his 1966 pop and country smash hit I'm A Nut. Now Bear Family rectifies that situation, reissuing that original LP plus every other recording they could find by Pullins, including previously unissued sides. The success of Roger Miller in the mid-1960s led others to work in his style, but no one except Pullins really managed it. The same offbeat humor, the same undercurrent of darkness and weirdness and social commentary. A minor classic.
