MACK SELF
Easy To Love, The Sun Years Plus

BCD 16519-AH

Sam Phillips had a chance to work with two natives of Helena, Arkansas: Conway Twitty (a/k/a Harold Jenkins) and Mack Self. Phillips chose Mack Self. Although his choice was never rewarded financially with a hit record, this collection of Mack's early work shows that Phillips' judgement was as sound as ever. Half of the titles Mack recorded at Sun were released on two 45s during the 1950s. The remaining material had to wait almost 30 years for Sun archaeologists to discover. It was worth the wait.
Tracks like Going Crazy and Lovin' Memories revealed that Mack Self could turn his hand to rockabilly with the best of them. But back then, Sam Phillips was more interested in Mack's pure country soul. It was a brave decision that went against Sun's growing reputation for unleashing the music of southern wild men. At the least, Mack's two releases on Sun and Phillips International reveal how deeply Sam Phillips was impressed by the charms of Mack's pure country style.
Easy To Love remains one of the most beautiful country songs of its era, and here we present it in three versions, showing that it didn't always sound like the version on Sun 273. Everyday and Mad At You (also presented in previously unreleased alternate versions) retain their power as well. These are timeless recordings, beautifully written and cleanly performed. Mack worked with the best of Sun sidemen like Stan Kesler, Bill Cantrell, Billy Riley, Johnny Bernero, Roland Janes, Jimmy Van Eaton, W. S. Holland and Martin Willis. Their contributions are all on record here.
This collection brings together every title recorded by Mack Self at 706 Union Avenue between 1955 – 1959. Along with previously unissued alternate takes and false starts, we now have the fullest picture yet of Mack Self's days at Sun. Previously unpublished photos and new interview material by Sun historian Hank Davis offer further depth to our coverage. In addition, we include eight post-Sun tracks recorded by Mack in Memphis between 1960 – 1972. The collection concludes with a few reminiscences about these historic times spoken in Mack's own words. Finally there is a priceless moment here available nowhere else: an impromptu acoustic performance of Mack's musical tribute to his days at the Sun label during its Golden Era.

GARY SHELTON aka TROY SHONDELL
Kissin’ At The Drive In
BCD 16270 -AH

Before he changed his name to Troy Shondell in 1961 and charted his major hit This Time, Gary Shelton was an aspiring teen rocker signed to two major labels. His early career veered between classic ‘50s teen idol pop music, force-fed to him by his producers, and the raw rock ‘n’ roll that was Shelton’s true love. For the first time, Bear Family Records collects all of Gary Shelton’s 1950s material (including 13 previously unreleased tracks) recorded prior to his name change and subsequent hit record. This unusual package includes vintage photographs, as well as detailed music notes and an extensive interview with the artist by Hank Davis.

Kissin’ At The Drive-In - Goodbye Little Darlin’ - Be Honest With Me - My Hero - Lonely - Honey Bee - Till The End Of The Line - The Trance - Stop The World (My Baby’s Gone) - I’ve Counted On You - Yours Till I Die - Maybe Later, Baby - The Great Lover - Be Bop Love - Walk To The Dance - My Little Carol (fast version) - A Prayer And Jukebox - My Little Carol (without chorus) - Strangers - The Curse Of An Aching Heart - Don’t Send Me Away - Be Bop Love (with echo) - Teenage Love Call - My Little Carol (with chorus)

GENE SIMMONS
Drinkin' Wine - The Sun - Years, plus
BCD 16758-AH
CD

To most pop music fans and historians, Gene Simmons was a One-Hit Wonder. We know better. For nearly a decade before he hit the best-seller charts in 1964 with Haunted House, Gene had been writing songs, performing in scruffy beer joints, and laying down tracks at Sun's tiny studio on Union Avenue. Only one record was ever released on the original Sun label, but many of Gene's other Sun titles and alternate takes have appeared in haphazard fashion over the years as part of the never -ending cycle of Sun archaeology.

Finally, this collection brings together all the essentials of Gene's recording career at Sun Records. Every title he cut at 706 Union Avenue is here, many in multiple takes. From his earliest Tupelo demos to more polished studio work, these tapes reveal as never before the heavy influence of southern blues on Gene Simmons' music. They also showcase the distinctive lead guitar work provided by Gene's brother, Carl. New interview material by Sun historian Hank Davis helps to round out the fullest picture yet of this underrated artist. As a bonus, we also present the first three recordings Gene made across Memphis at the Hi Records Studio in 1959, two of which appeared on the Checker label. All in all, this is the most comprehensive look yet at one of Sun’s most enthusiastic rockabilly performers.
